I don’t watch teleseryes. In fact, I don’t really watch TV. But, Miss Jocelyn, our awesome household cook does. And, she keeps her TV on when she prepares our meals and all throughout lunch time. To save what’s left of my social life, I have to go on record that I am an unwilling witness to the unfolding of this kilig-serye as I only overhear their dialog on a daily basis.
It used to puzzle me how such a fantastic plot can trigger such a primal emotion as “kilig” (which, by the way has no official english translation). But, it all makes sense if you do a bit of Internet research. Here are my 8 attempts to reason out this trending bit of pop culture.
8. We love mestizos and chinitos
It seems that Filipinos have conquered most of Europe and North America by making babies with their citizens. Now it looks like China and Korea are on our list of countries to conquer.
7. We love boss figures
We are number 4 in the global Power Distance Index list. We have a natural inclination to say Ma’am/Sir and po/opo to just about anyone who will accept our respect and hospitality.
6. We love the quick way into riches
We love playing lotto and we have a multi-billion dollar gambling industry. Maya’s story is no different. Marrying into money is one of the oldest themes in the world. Ad it’s something that our third world mentality still cannot escape.
5. We love impossible challenges
We enjoy taking risks just for the sheer fun of it. We like watching death-defying talents. We love ogling road accidents to see if someone almost died and survived. Watching how one person can defy all statistical probabilities (i.e. be the nanny of the perfect kid whose father is the perfect boss, so perfect he sends and drives you to school, and then falls in love with you) is just very, very good TV.
4. We love to be emotional
Gallup has declared us the world’s most emotional country. Sir Chief’s stoic and unemotional demeanor is the perfect match to our boiling passions. It seems like he can take any emotion we can throw at him.
3. We love kids
Maya gets to have three kids instantly without the 27 months of pregnancy and none of the associated labor pains. How cool is that?
2. We want to be MayaMaya is the shining example of the Filipina Cinderella. She has no evil stepsisters, but she comes from humble beginnings. We want her hard work to be rewarded and her dreams to come true because we want our hard work to result our dreams coming true even though the work and the dream have no direct connection whatsoever.
1. Richard Yap is a handsome fellow
The public has singled him out from a generic bunch of Chow King chefs. There must be something about this guy that’s so irresistible that the entire country can’t get enough of him.
