[dropcap letter="I"]t’s so easy to hate on celebrities, really: they’re rich, they’re mostly beautiful, and in general, they don’t give a rat’s hiney what you have to say about them from in front your computer screen, so you get to froth in your celebrity hatred with zero repercussions, unless you run across their fan clubs. But really now, life is too short. I can understand not being a fan of a celebrity, but hatred? I don’t get it.

Now, we have people who are reviled and rightfully so: plunderers, murderers, and Chicser, for example. Those aren’t the types we’re looking at here. And if only based on the comments section, there’s no way we can pretend that Anne Curtis, despite her recent outburst in Prive, is anywhere near greatly “hated.”

Finally, and quite arbitrarily, I’m also excluding political figures like former Customs Chief Ruffy Biazon from this list, even though I really believe he got way more hate than he deserved (especially if it turns out he’s innocent of the malversation charges recently brought up against him). These 8 just get disproportionate amounts of hate to what they are actually guilty of…

[text_image img="https://8list.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Chito-Miranda-8V.jpg" width="100%" type="title"]Chito-Miranda-8[list_title][/text_image]

Hated For: His sex video with girlfriend Neri Naig.

See, I don’t get why Chito got so much flak for his video scandal. Unlike Wally Bayola, Chito wasn’t cheating on anyone with Neri when this was recorded. It’s not like anyone intended for the video to get out, right?

Besides, the sooner this country stops being so backwards about its views on sex, the sooner people would actually stop making it such a big deal. This self-righteousness in the face of rising teenage pregnancy rates in the country looks pretty hypocritical, at best.

[text_image img="https://8list.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Jinri-Park-7V.jpg" width="100%" type="title"]Jinri-Park-7[list_title][/text_image]

[buffer by="0px 25px 25px 25px"]

Hated For: Supposedly being untalented, pandering to geeks and OPM fans, and being aloof towards fans.

Here’s a secret that might shock you: celebrities don’t really owe you their lives and their undying friendship, no matter how big a fan you are of theirs. Jinri Park got to where she was because she knew how to market herself, and if that meant pandering to some people she would never give the time of day to in real life, then so be it. Others do it all the time: she just wasn’t that subtle about it.

If you expected her to date you just because you bought all the magazines she posed for, then there’s a lot less wrong with her for ignoring you than there is wrong with you for treating a woman like a vending machine.

[text_image img="https://8list.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Ricky-Lo-6V.jpg" width="100%" type="title"]Ricky-Lo-6[list_title][/text_image]

[buffer by="0px 25px 25px 25px"]

Hated For: His awkward, cringe-inducing interview with Anne Hathaway. Yes, it’s been over a year, and people still refuse to let it go.

It may not have been Ricky Lo’s shining moment, but to utterly despise the man and want him to no longer make a livelihood on the basis of one bad interview is a bit much, especially since that interview clearly took two to tango. Ms. Hathaway herself wasn’t in the best of moods, either. At worst, I felt embarrassed for him during the interview, but angry? Certainly not worth the energy. I’d rather laugh about it than fume.

[text_image img="https://8list.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Alodia-Gosiengfiao-5V.jpg" width="100%" type="title"]Alodia-Gosiengfiao-5[list_title][/text_image]

[buffer by="0px 25px 25px 25px"]

Hated For: Supposedly misrepresenting cosplay, among a host of other things.

Why do some of the most logical people I know turn irrational at the mention of Alodia’s name? I’ve heard all sorts of reasoning for their hatred, including how she managed to make money out of cosplay, even if some of their other cosplaying friends do the exact same thing. Some people even make up the ridiculous rule that because it’s “cos-play,” then it should only be for fun. Tell that to Kobe Bryant, a basketball play-er who just signed a two-year contract worth $48.5 Million to play for the Lakers.

Let’s pretend that Alodia was just lucky: she was at the right place at the right time, and that’s why she’s a star now. Let’s also assume that there are better cosplayers out there who also deserve attention (which she acknowledges, by the way). How is her being lucky her fault? And if you were in her shoes, would you honestly say “no thanks, I know there are better people than me,” and turn down a chance to make a living doing what you love?

It’s a game of double standards, really: because Alodia is a girl, she is subjected to this stupid fake geek girl label, where women need to prove how legit their geekiness is while any guy just has to claim to be one. This is doubly true if said lady is even remotely attractive.

[text_image img="https://8list.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Sharon-Cuneta-4V.jpg" width="100%" type="title"]Sharon-Cuneta-4[list_title][/text_image]

[buffer by="0px 25px 25px 25px"]

Hated For: Picking fights with haters on Twitter. Also, for being fat.

Sharon Cuneta is 47 years old. If you looked half as good as she does at that age, I highly doubt you’d be that mortified, even if you’re overweight. Sure, it seems a bit beneath her to actually acknowledge people who are sending her hate messages on Twitter, but I think it’s high time we stopped expecting our celebrities to be role models all the time, too. If that doesn’t do the trick for you, there’s also the option of unfollowing her.

[text_image img="https://8list.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Daniel-Padilla-3V.jpg" width="100%" type="title"]Daniel-Padilla-3[list_title][/text_image]

[buffer by="0px 25px 25px 25px"]

Hated For: Ruining OPM.

Daniel Padilla can’t sing. There, I said it. But at no point did he go to my house, take all my APO cassettes, my Itchyworms CDs, or my Eraserheads reunion DVD, then proceed to burn all of it in my face. So no, he didn’t ruin OPM. My old favorites still exist, and I can listen to them instead anytime I hear his terrible voice pop up while having lunch in KFC.

Ultimately, has he ever even done anything particularly controversial and deserving of rabid hatred so far? It’s not like he’s been caught with illegal firearms, womanizing, or getting into fistfights with fellow actors--all things his uncle, Robin, did. And got away with, by the way.

[text_image img="https://8list.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/CHarice-2V.jpg" width="100%" type="title"]CHarice-2[list_title][/text_image]

[buffer by="0px 25px 25px 25px"]

Hated For: Coming out as lesbian.

While Piolo Pascual and Raymond Gutierrez are hated for not coming out, Charice got a lot of flak earlier this year for all the drama involving her sexuality. A lot of fans instantly became non-fans, as if Charice’s sexual preference has anything to do with how well she sings. I’ll say it outright: while I'm a fan, I recognize Charice is far from perfect because her diction leaves a lot to be desired. Who she’s dating doesn’t color my opinion about her one bit.

What were you expecting Charice to do? Continue lying to herself? Between living a lie and being honest with who she really is, isn’t it obvious what the logical course of action should be?

[text_image img="https://8list.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Marian-RIvera-1V.jpg" width="100%" type="title"]Marian-RIvera-1[list_title][/text_image]

[buffer by="0px 25px 25px 25px"]

Hated For: Being a so-called palengkera.

So, people hate Jinri for pretending to be something she’s not. And people hate Marian Rivera for not pretending to be the epitome of tact, poise, and social grace. Huh.

Marian is so hated that she tops an international poll-based “most hated” list, ahead of even Adolf Hitler himself. On one hand, we have a woman who doesn’t have the kind of charm, wit, and eloquence you expect from someone with a face like hers. On the other, you had the man who murdered millions of Jews in World War II. If that disproportionate amount of hate doesn’t alarm you, I don’t know what will.

Have people even bothered checking up on Marian lately? What was the last genuine controversy she’s been involved in? It has been years since she got into a real fight with anyone, or anything of the sort, yet people still hate Marian as if she personally killed their pet kitten with a machete.

She may not be the most elegant person ever, but I sure don’t think the amount of hate she is subjected to on a regular basis is in any way proportional to whatever things she has actually done.

I could go on all day, but in general, I always tend to say about these things: if you’re going to be a hater, make sure you’re hating for the right reasons. Otherwise, you end up looking petty, and no better than the celebrity you despise so much.
